Milan, 18 December (LaPresse) – Ottavia Piana, the 32-year-old caver who had been stuck in the Abisso Bueno Fonteno cave in the province of Bergamo since last Saturday, was brought out of the cave at 2.59am. This was announced by the Alpine and Speleological Rescue Service. Once out of the cave, the stretcher was transferred by the Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico teams to an area where the fire brigade had set up a suitable point for helicopter rescue by means of a winch. Once the woman was taken over by the Areu 118 helicopter, she was transported to Bergamo Hospital. The rescue operations lasted continuously for 75 hours. The rescue activities, which began at midnight on 15 December, ended ahead of schedule and involved 159 technicians from the Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico (National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps) from 13 Italian regions. The woman was constantly monitored and assisted by a total of 6 doctors and 8 Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps nurses.
